Exclusively, King Abdul Aziz University took a distinctive step towards upgrading the future of the Saudi Arabia’s shipping industry in order to develop the maritime transport sector by feeding it with qualified national competencies in the area of nautical science to fill the serious shortfall in manpower in this area which does not exceed 8% of the total employed Nautical Officers on board ships.

The Department of Nautical Science aims to graduate students who are familiar with the basics of navigation and traffic systems, maritime Navigation arts and its duties and cargo handling, and having the competence and knowledge of ships and its leadership, safety of crew and passenger as well as cargo on board and the laws of maritime transport and environmental protection to serve as Nautical Officers and Captains of both governmental and commercial overseas ships.
